Why solar panels? A solar panel and battery have losses. As a matter fact it is around 60% efficient between harvesting and using that power from the sun.Batteries may last only a few years so there is a repeated cost, while PV panels may last 30-40 years.Solar panels do not produce power in shade or when the sun is not shining.Batteries can be destroyed when not keeping them charged. What do you want to power with sun energy? If you think about powering an Air conditioner, that can be done but the original cost would be very high. For a diy person, lights and fans and powering electronics come to mind. Some even may put a system together to be used as an emergency while for others it is daily life. If someone is still on grid power and wants just some light when the power goes out, a $40 emergency light may be a cheaper way to get light for about 1/2 an hour into a room.A UPS (uninterrupted power supply) would be another cheaper option to have power if the grid power is lost.If independence is someone goal than a solar system is a good start.
