Hi I am very new to this! I am interested in building a small solar power system to power lights and outdoor sockets etc as a contribution to eco living. There appears to be an almost endless supply of “how to” guides and “quick and easy” type forums and advice on the internet! I found these ones to maybe be of genuine interest but wondered what you experts think. How to build a solar generator ezgreenenergy.com/How-To-Build-A-Solar-Generator.pdfSolar power 101 DIY GUIDE www.thefutureinyourhands.co.uk/Am I barking up the wrong tree folks? Many thanks and cheers, John.

Welcome to the site. There are a lot of DIY here and this is a good place to learn. The Solar generator is a good thing to learn on. I am not a salesman of any type but I have been into solar for about Six years now. And If I can do it a monkey can do it.
I do recommend you keep the cost of learning as low as you can. Here in Texas Used Golf cart Batteries with exchange run about 30 to 40 Bucks. These are rebuilt in the area. Do a web search for a company in your area Ask a few friends about getting old not working Batteries ( Core for exchange ) Get Two rebuilt Six volt Golf cart batteries ( Best amp rating they have) Since you are learning don't spend a bunch of cash till you decide if you like it. I started with Harbor freight and its 40 Watt kit. Yep then it was cheezey. Now its Not. Its is a 100 watt kit and It will have all the components to learn with. It also robust and pulls in some energy on clear nights and that is a big plus for me.
I Made a scavenger hunt to find components . Wires cables Sockets and 12volt plugs/Appliances were found. Mostly at garage sales ( Another source for wire fixture and lights were Goodwill stores and Habitat for humanity's RESTORE stores. Ground Bars / 12 and 14 gauge romex can be found. 6 and 8 gauge jumper cable can be found cheep.
Me I looked at my house like a car 12 volt everywhere I could make it work. TVs Radios and some small Coolers are out there. The more you can keep on 12 volt the better.
On this form there are companies that mask a beginners you will learn to spot them. Just advice.
Lastly if you like going solar after you have played with it. Always plan to expand because you will.
I hope I have helped. If I can Help I will I am still a newbie and I try to stay away from the 120 volt world.
Good Luck and Welcome Dave Simmo
