So I am tired of being reemed by the electric co. I am brand new to solar energy, I have read some and watched some videos but as far as hands on, brand new.
To get to the point, the biggest thing using up our electric is our furnace. So I am thinking I want to set up some solar panels to run some infrared heaters (1-2 decent sized) in our house so that the furnace doesn't have to run much. I have seen people charge batteries, hook them up with an inverter, and swap them out while the other battery charges...I have also seen people hook the panel to the battery as well as the inverter to the same battery and use the solar that way. I am on a budget though so the cheaper the better and I need a kit.
My questions: 1) What size panel(s) do you think I need (watts)? 2) Any recommendations on a kit? 3) How do you recommend I "wire" them? 4) If I charge and swap batteries, how long do you think I can run a heater off of it? 5) If I charge and swap batteries, how many times can you charge and use a battery before it finally stops working?

Even if you're on the right track if you stand still you'll get run over.

I'm also new to solar but from my reserch I've found out that Electric heat is the worst use of electric power. The cost of the panels and batteries to run solar electric heat is more than what the electric company is charging you.
The best way to heat with solar is solar hot water heating with vacuum tubes or flat panels.

Hi zachc Some of the thing AC/And Heating are tough to get. We are Using wood. Dont Know how you feel about it. There are some of the folks on YouTube pulling it off with what looks like a Heat box www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvEfmDH_Y2oWe are still gathering Parts for this. So I dont know how it works. Hot Water isnt to tough. AC we Beat it with a Evap Cooler

Just as an aside for heating with wood economically have a look at Rocket Mass Heaters. Fauchomatic Offgrid have just built one and detail it out a bit . Only 10% normal wood use! fauchomatic off grid

I looked into Rocket Mass Heaters last summer to heat my greenhouse this winter. Build a small mock-up to see how well they worked and could believe how much heat they put out with very little wood. I used bricks as the thermomass and there gave off heat for a couple of hours after the fire when out. Never did find the time to build one. So the greenhouse grow nothing after the end of Oct.
Over the winter I looked into Solar hot water heating and have found it will take up less room and in the summer when I don't need heat I can easily remove the water barrels for more space.

We have considered a wood stove. But if it's the kind of wood stove that you run inside of your home, doesn't the smell of the wood burning pretty much make everything in the house smell like a campfire? I've done some more looking into this and I think solar for heat just giant going to do it. Also tossing around the idea of a pellet stove??? Any thoughts?

I like to use natural energy because it doesn't harm nature back and nature cycle go smoothly. we can convert solar energy in electric power and can run electric equipments.
